Learn Common Mistakes In English Question Formation Part-2. In this lesson we will review Negative Questions and a Final Check on Question Formation. If you didn’t see part 1 of this topic, you can watch part 1 here first.
Negative questions
We form negative questions with auxiliary + n’t + subject: Don’t you like it? Isn’t she coming? Haven’t you finished? We use them to:
- show surprise: Haven’t you seen that film? Everyone has!
- check something we believe is true: Isn’t that your brother over there?
- make polite suggestions or complaints: Why don’t we take a break? / Can’t you turn the music down?
Answering negative questions
Answer about the fact, not the question form:
| Question | If you like it | If you don’t |
|---|---|---|
| Don’t you like coffee? | Yes, I do. | No, I don’t. |
| Aren’t you tired? | Yes, I am. | No, I’m not. |
Final check: question formation
- Use an auxiliary (do/does/did, be, have, modals) before the subject.
- After do/does/did, use the base verb (Did you go, not
Did you went). - No auxiliary in subject questions (Who knows?).
- In indirect questions, use normal word order: Can you tell me where the station is?
Start with part 1: yes/no and wh- questions. More: common mistakes lessons.
