When it comes to learning English, the very task itself can seem to be more than you want to handle sometimes. Rest assured, that is how almost everyone feels when they are trying to learn a new language. The English language does not necessarily make it any easier, with all of its weird spellings and words that sound the same, yet mean something completely different. Fortunately, you can learn English and even gain English fluency in approximately seven steps. The key is learning where to start and finding your passion for learning a new language.
The easiest way to start when it comes to learning English or any other language for that matter, is to learn to speak the language in phrases. Why is it easier to learn language in phrases than learning individual words? Generally speaking, it is easier to learn phrases because it helps you figure out how people that are native speakers of the language speak. (Read English fluency strategy 4) In addition, it helps you figure out how similar words can be used differently and how the way words that are used in a phrase can create a completely different meaning from using the words alone.
Read and listen to things in English that YOU want to learn.
The next thing you should do is study anything and everything that you are interested in, in the language that you are trying to learn. It is obviously more fun to read about something that you have a genuine interest in than it is to read something that you couldn’t care less about. Therefore, learning about something that you want to learn more about and reading about it in the language you are studying accomplishes two things at one time and it makes it easier to stick with it while you are learning a new language.
If you simply follow these two main goals, you will already be well on your way to learning a new language and gaining English fluency, even if you have tried to learn the language before and have not been entirely successful. Before you know it, you will be speaking more than one language and you will be able to converse with larger groups of people more easily.
